What is The-Law

I think this is a very funny cartoon indeed.

Most people believe most passionately that a nation should be run by a good set of laws. But, even if you ask a lawyer, no one will be able to tell you what these laws are or even should be. The only laws most people know are the 10 commandments. But these are just commandments – so they don’t tell you what will happen to you if you don’t obey them. I’m afraid that the law is a rather complex subject.

Sometimes lawyers also don't want to know the truth themselves.

But I like to think of myself as a clear-headed mathematician. So it is my job to say what the basic laws of a country ought to be like. So here goes:

The first set of laws ought to be: a system of penalties, which mean that a citizen will not have an expectation of gain, from carrying-out an anti-social action.

An example of how this first set of laws might work could be the following. Suppose a person steals an object worth $100. And then let us suppose that the chance of catching such a criminal is 10%. Then this person needs to be fined $1,000 so that they do not have expectation of gain by carrying out the criminal activity of stealing.

The law of inertia is mostly that people want their current employment to

continue. And this leads to long-term problems in a society.

The second set of rules ought to be: a system of penalties, which mean that a citizen will not have an expectation of gain by telling a falsehood.

You might consider my first set of laws will be rather complex. But the rules preventing people telling falsehoods must be even more complex. And, unfortunately it is very easy to make a gain by telling a falsehood – and most people know this and tell falsehoods very often. We all do this and it is very hard to stop this practise.
I don’t think any law can stop people lying unless the item is recorded and then stored in a public place. And, even then, the sequence of actions that indicate that the recorded item was false must be quite tricky.

These are the two relevant chapters of my book.

The full details of my complete solutions to both these problems is given in my Society of Choice - book”(pdf). The picture on the right shows the two chapters where this subject is mostly covered (together with their sub-sections).

You will notice that my Information chapter comes before my Judicial chapter - in spite of what I have just told you about the Information System being more complex than the Judicial System. This is unavoidable because Judges must know that the facts presented in the case have a reasonable chance of being correct - before they can give a judgement.

The two chapters are rather complex. But they both start with a true story about my own personal public involvement in these two areas. So you can just read these items, if you want. This book is big - but it doesn’t take too long to download.
